LUBBOCK, TEXAS - Julia Baugh’s custom made purple wheelchair with the sparkly metal and butterfly straps sat unused in perfectly usable condition for several months after the 24-year-old’s death in 2015.

Her wheelchair was her only means of getting around independently, said Tracy Baugh, Julia’s mother. After her death, the chair was a bittersweet reminder that the owner no longer needed it.

“Julia’s wheelchair was a part of her,” Baugh said. “It was a symbol of independence, mobility, freedom, the ability to be a part of the community. It was very special but we had no need for it.”
